Concierge Medicine: Pros, Cons, and What It Means for Healthcare

Ever sat in a doctor’s office watching the clock tick down on your 15-minute slot, frantically trying to remember every question while knowing you won’t get real answers anyway? Those hurried visits where you have to think of everything to ask or realize later what you forgot to mention.

Yeah, you’re not alone.

Traditional healthcare can feel like a revolving door: impersonal, rushed, and focused on volume rather than outcomes. It’s designed to move people through as fast as possible. Not because doctors don’t care (they do!), but because the conventional model rarely allows time for the deeper conversations that lead to real solutions.

Enter: Concierge medicine. It’s a different approach to healthcare, giving doctors more time, more access, and more space to get to know their patients, not just their symptoms.

But does concierge medicine actually provide better care, or is it just a boutique model with a premium label?

Let’s look at the pros, the cons, and the unfiltered truth about whether this approach is actually worth your consideration.

✅ The Pros of Concierge Medicine

1. More time with your doctor

The average conventional doctor spends just 7 minutes with each patient. At Ivalo MD, we schedule generous, unhurried visits that give you and Dr. Sokol the time needed to explore your health thoroughly, whether that’s an in-depth initial consultation or a focused follow-up.

We’ve all been there: Waiting weeks for an appointment, only to get a 7-minute visit that barely scratches the surface. With concierge medicine, that time barrier disappears because your doctor sees fewer patients by design.

Since doctors aren’t bound by strict scheduling quotas, they can sit down with you (in-person or virtually) and actually investigate what’s going on with your health. This means no more feeling like you’re being rushed out the door before you’ve even finished explaining your symptoms.

Bonus points: Between your visits, you’ll still have direct access to your doctor. Call, text, email, even carrier pigeon (if that’s your thing).

The point is, when you need your doctor, we’re there. Quick responses, real conversations, and no frustrating games of phone tag.

2. Truly personalized healthcare

What conventional medicine considers “normal” on lab work isn’t the same as what’s optimal for your unique body. There’s a significant difference between “within range” and truly thriving.

Your health is unique, and your healthcare plan should be too. This means:

✔️ Comprehensive diagnostics beyond standard lab work, including hormonal, metabolic, gut health, and inflammatory markers for deeper insights

✔️ Advanced testing to detect and prevent health issues early, ensuring a proactive approach to long-term wellness

✔️ Precision-driven treatment plans based on your lab results: lifestyle, genetics, and personal health goals (no generic protocols)

✔️ A strategic blend of conventional and functional medicine, integrating evidence-based treatments with root-cause solutions tailored to your body and lifestyle

In short: It’s healthcare built around you, not the system’s limitations.

At Ivalo MD, for example, we take the time to understand the full picture: your medical history, daily habits, stress levels, environment, nutrition, and sleep.

Since every decision is guided by data, expertise, and a deep understanding of you, your care is always precise, proactive, and built to get real results.

3. No insurance headaches or barriers to care

Have you ever had an insurance company dictate what care you can or can’t receive? We’ll safely assume you’re nodding your head.

Our functional medicine approach operates outside the constraints of insurance, giving you access to the care you actually need, not just what’s covered by your plan.

Instead of working within a system where insurance companies dictate treatment options and care standards, our membership model puts you at the center. You get care designed around your needs, not what businessmen in boardrooms have decided is profitable or “medically necessary” this quarter.

At Ivalo MD, we still encourage our patients to use their insurance benefits where possible, including coverage for prescriptions and other necessary treatments. However, when it comes to in-depth testing, longer visits, and proactive care, insurance isn’t calling the shots. Your health is.

4. A clinic that feels more like home

Healthcare is more effective when it functions as a partnership, one where you’re heard, supported, and valued (not just processed).

At Ivalo MD, we’ve reimagined what a visit to the doctor should feel like. No cold, clinical spaces with harsh lighting, mystery smells, and chairs that look like they came straight from a 1980s airport lounge. No mass-produced paintings of vases no one asked for.

Instead, we’ve created a calm, welcoming space built around long-term wellness, real relationships, and helping you feel seen and supported, not processed.

❌ The Cons of Concierge Medicine

1. It is an investment

We’ll just go right ahead and say it:concierge medicine isn’t the cheapest option. But it’s not supposed to be. You’re paying for time, depth, and precision most models can’t offer. It also ensures your doctor can be on call for you when you need them most. While traditional healthcare might seem less expensive upfront, the membership model allows us to provide a level of care that simply isn’t possible in conventional settings.

This fee is what gives our membership model its strength.

Instead of fragmented, symptom-based visits, you’re working with a doctor who has the time to focus entirely on your health. You’re choosing care that’s proactive, precise, and deeply personalized. That means longer appointments, advanced diagnostics, and a strategy built to help you stay well, not just manage symptoms.

So while cost can be a real consideration, our patients find that the quality, access, and outcomes make it worthwhile.

2. Availability is limited

Because concierge doctors don’t overload their schedules with back-to-back, rushed visits, they keep their patient panels intentionally small. That means more time, more access, and more personalized care… but it also means spots can fill up fast.

If you’re thinking about making the switch, now’s the time to start the conversation with our team. We’d love to walk you through the process, answer your questions, and help you figure out if concierge medicine is the right fit for you.

3. Some concierge medicine doctors (including Ivalo MD) don’t bill insurance

In the traditional healthcare model, patients are conditioned to expect insurance to cover their medical expenses, despite the reality of high deductibles, copays, denied claims, and limited networks that often leave them paying significant out-of-pocket costs anyway.

In the concierge medicine model, you’ll find that many doctors don’t bill insurance and instead opt for a membership fee. While prescriptions and standard lab work may still be covered through your insurance plan, the membership fees for services like extended visits and continuous care planning are not.

At Ivalo MD, we believe healthcare should be guided by what leads to meaningful results, not by what insurance is willing to approve. (You can read more about our decision not to bill insurance and how it allows us to provide you with the care you deserve in this article!)

Instead of seeing this as a disadvantage, our patients view it as an investment in their long-term health and wellbeing, and in a physician who isn’t bound by the limitations of insurance based healthcare.

What Makes Ivalo MD Different

Not all concierge practices are created equal. At Ivalo MD, we’ve created a distinctive approach that focuses on comprehensive, root-cause medicine:

Deep Medical Expertise in Both Worlds

Dr. Sokol brings over 20 years of experience as a board-certified physician with advanced training in Functional Medicine from the Institute for Functional Medicine. This rare combination, found in less than 1% of primary care physicians nationwide, means you receive care that’s both medically rigorous and innovative. We don’t have to choose between conventional treatments and root-cause solutions because we’re experts in both.

Your True Primary Care Physician

Unlike many concierge practices that provide supplemental care while you maintain a separate primary care doctor, Dr. Sokol can serve as your dedicated PCP (depending on your chosen membership tier). This means all your healthcare needs, from preventive screenings to complex health concerns, are coordinated through one physician who knows your complete health story.

Truly Integrative Testing and Analysis

While many practices offer basic testing, our comprehensive Ivalo Blueprint panels are specifically designed to identify subtle imbalances across multiple body systems. We look beyond isolated markers to understand how your hormones, gut health, inflammation levels, and metabolism are interconnected, creating a more comprehensive picture of your health.

Personalized Protocols, Not Cookie-Cutter Plans

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all protocols. Your treatment plan is meticulously crafted based on your unique biochemistry, lifestyle, and health goals. We create solutions that work with your life, not generic approaches that ignore your individual needs and constraints.

Direct and Responsive Access

While many concierge practices offer improved access, we take it further. When you need your doctor, you won’t press 4 for a callback. You’ll get straight through to us. (No classical hold music included).

Here, you communicate directly with your physician. No gatekeepers, no message filtering, no explaining your situation multiple times to different staff members. Your relationship is with your doctor, not with a complex phone system or a rotating staff of unfamiliar faces.

Is concierge medicine really right for you?

If conventional care has left you feeling unheard or stuck in a cycle of symptom management, concierge medicine might be the approach you’ve been looking for.

Whether you’re managing chronic concerns or simply want a more proactive approach to your wellbeing, we’re here to help.

We've created a concierge functional medicine practice that puts you first—where proactive, personalized care is the norm, not the exception.
