Meet Dr. Sokol: Co-Founder and Concierge Functional Medicine Doctor at Ivalo MD

I’ve spent my entire career committed to helping people feel their best, because that’s always been the heart of why I became a doctor in the first place. But somewhere along the way, I realized there was more to medicine than the traditional model allowed. More time. More connection. More possibility.

So, who is the physician behind Ivalo MD?

Well, that’s me, Matthew Sokol, MD.

I was born and raised in New York, where some of my earliest impressions of medicine came from watching doctors build real relationships with their patients, relationships built on trust, time, and compassion. That stuck with me. I didn’t just want to treat people; I wanted to understand them. That desire to connect, to listen, and to make a meaningful difference is what ultimately led me to pursue medicine, and what still drives me today.

Fast forward a bit, and I’m finishing my residency at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, New York. I had that new-doctor optimism: driven, ready to make an impact, and convinced I could change lives.

And I did. I spent several years as a primary care physician at a clinic in New York and over 16 years leading care at Baylor Scott & White Health, Texas’s largest not-for-profit healthcare system and among the largest in the United States, treating everything from everyday illnesses to complex chronic conditions. And in that time, I helped thousands of patients feel better, manage their health, and live fuller lives. I built a reputation for listening closely, thinking critically, and delivering care that patients could count on.

But even with that success, I began to notice something familiar across some of my more complex cases. While we could manage blood pressure, stabilize blood sugar, and keep symptoms in check, some patients still didn’t feel like themselves. They were doing everything right on paper, but they were still tired. Still foggy. Still not at their best.

That got me thinking more deeply, not just about their experiences, but about mine. I found myself reflecting on the patterns I was seeing, the questions my patients were asking, and the growing sense that there was more to the story of long-term health than traditional medicine often allowed space to explore.

I started paying closer attention to the system itself:

A system that prioritizes quick visits over real conversations.
A system where prescriptions often come before understanding.
A system that’s reactive, not proactive.
More transactional than transformational.
And reliant on surface-level testing that rarely digs deep enough to explain why someone isn’t feeling well.

I knew there had to be another way. Something more aligned with the kind of care I wanted to practice. That’s when I began reflecting on my own health journey and the undeniable role things like nutrition, stress, sleep, and lifestyle play in how we actually feel.

As I dug deeper, I came across functional medicine. It wasn’t just a different way of practicing, it was a different way of thinking about health.

Functional medicine is root-cause medicine. It’s about looking at the full picture, how every system in the body is interconnected, and creating a plan that’s as precise as it is personal.

The more I learned, the more it resonated. This was the kind of medicine I had always envisioned.

Pursuing advanced training in functional medicine was a big step. I had a successful career, a full patient panel, and a reputation I was proud of. But expanding my knowledge in this space felt like the natural next chapter, one that would allow me to offer even more to the patients who trusted me with their care.

And once I began applying these principles, everything shifted.

Patients began experiencing breakthroughs. They had more energy. Better sleep. Clearer minds. They weren’t just managing conditions, they were making real progress. And they wanted to keep going. They wanted to optimize, not just maintain.

That was a turning point for me. This is what medicine should feel like.

That’s when my wife, Erin, and I decided to build something of our own. A practice rooted in everything we value: time, trust, and transformation.

We created Ivalo MD as a concierge functional medicine experience for people who are ready to take full ownership of their health journey, with support that’s collaborative, responsive, and built entirely around them.

No rushed visits. No one-size-fits-all plans. No “your labs look normal” dismissals when you know your body is telling you otherwise.

Just thoughtful, strategic care designed to help you feel your absolute best, consistently and sustainably.

Today, I’m proud to practice at the intersection of McKinney and Prosper, TX at Ivalo MD with my incredible wife, Erin, by my side. We built this practice with a clear mission: to give patients the time, attention, and tools they need to reach their full potential, and feel truly seen along the way.

With over 20 years of experience in medicine, I’ve been honored to be named one of D Magazine’s Best Doctors in Dallas. But the most meaningful recognition will always be the trust of the patients we serve, and the results we see together.

Because here’s what I believe: you don’t have to settle for “normal.” You deserve to feel clear, energized, resilient, and in control of your health. If that’s the kind of care you’ve been looking for, we’d be honored to be part of your journey.
